Johnny Got His Gun, by Dalton Trumbo. One of the major themes of this novel is the physical and psychological damage suffered by men in combat, and how it has the potential to transform them (not in a good way) into radically different people if they are lucky enough to survive battle. The protagonist of this novel has lost all of his limbs, his sight, hearing, and sense of smell after a bomb blast, and lives trapped inside his own head on a hospital bed as he struggles to communicate with the "outside world."
